Help protect the water California depends on.
Friends of Confluence West -
We know it’s early for our annual ask. But a rare opening is in front of us right now, and we need your help to make the most of it.
The problem: our water system is connected. The way we manage it isn’t.
The same water travels from mountain snow, through forests and rivers, into reservoirs and underground, out of your tap, and back to our streams and the Bay. But we plan, pay for, and regulate that water in pieces. Separate agencies handle drinking water, wastewater, floods, groundwater, rivers, forests, and wildlife—often without seeing the whole picture.
The result? We let water slip away that we could have saved. We spend public dollars on projects that fix one problem only to create another. And with hotter droughts, bigger wildfires, and more floods already here, we can’t afford to keep working in silos.
The fix: manage water as one system
“One Water” planning is simple: treat all our water—from the mountains to your tap and back to the river—as one connected system. When agencies plan and invest together, multiple projects can do several jobs at once:
Capture stormwater to refill underground supplies for dry years
Restore floodplains that protect homes and bring back fish and wildlife
Recycle water so less is pulled from rivers that are already stressed
Restore forests and wildlife habitats
Why now
California is writing its next Water Plan—the state’s official roadmap for managing water—and a new state administration is about to take office. That combination gives us a real chance to change how California manages water and set an example for the rest of the West.
Our goal
By 2028, California’s new Water Plan treats our water as a single connected system—and state rules and laws follow its lead.
What your gift does
Your tax-deductible donation helps Confluence West and our partners bring water agencies, scientists, and community leaders to the same table and turn their best thinking into practical recommendations for the state.
For you, that means more reliable water in dry and wet years, healthier rivers and wildlife, and smarter use of public money.
💧💧💧
Many excellent NGOs, water utilities, tribes, Nations, communities, and public agencies are working to protect rivers and forests in the American West from the (sometimes overwhelming) challenges posed by climate change. We are proud to partner with many of them.
Why support and work with Confluence West? Since 2007, we've learned that long-term, equitable solutions require dedicated and talented people from every sector, issue area, perspective, expertise, and culture to bring their part of the elephant, their truth, to the table.
We build and lead projects that connect diverse decision-makers who, in turn, create science- and evidence-based campaigns. Check out our work! Or, email Kimery.
